How to make a crossfaded gif

This is what we want to create today.

Ok, first of all create a normal gif, here’s a basic tutorial (it’s not mine, but this is how I learned it).

(Add coloring and other effects later)

Choose the LAST frame and it’s layer: (of course it depends on how you imported the frames)

Choose now the FIRST frame’s layer and click on the little eye next to it:

Now, the first and the last frame should look the same (because they show the same layer):

Now select Layer 1. (still on the last frame!) and change this 

into this (I’m not sure but I think it’s “lighten” in the english version, I’m using ps in german, sorry)

This is how the last frame should look now:

Pretty weird, I know :D

Add the coloring, sharpen the layers and change the time (I set it on 0,11) and you have your result! 

So you see it’s basically all about this little eye! :D

This “technique” is also very good if you want to combine different scenes, like here and here for example.

Hmmm, I don't know how that person made the lines because the lines don't look like they were cropped like the picture. I can be wrong. The way I'm going to show you how to do it might be different from that image. I don't know, you tell me if they look similar when you create your graphic. 

Okay just crop your image so that you have no background. Then.... 

Put that image on your background. 

Go back to your picture and resize it (bigger). 

Go to the stroke effect and set the px of the line to whatever size you want. 

Make your image invisible by making the opacity to 0 or set it to overlay or whatever. 

ONLY YOUR IMAGE NOT THE STROKE!

Then you drag those lines onto the background and adjust it. 

You do the same step again to create your second line making the line bigger then the first one you made. 

and that's it. I don't know if I explained this to well. But I hope it helped. If you didn't understand something, let me know so I can try to explain it better.

#5. How to make torn edge (texture) effect in Photoshop.

First You will need path to achieve this effect. Instead of drawing path in Photoshop it is good idea to copy and paste it from Illustrator. In Illustrator is possible to create path for torn edges with one only dynamic effect and here is how: (If You do not have Illustrator feel free to download shape for torn edges from here)  Start Illustrator and draw rectangle for example 640x480 with default fills. Then go to Effect > Transform & Distort > Roughen.  In Roughen dialog experiment with values and set Pointe to Corner in bottom right corner of dialog.  I have applied this settings: 1% Size, Detail 10/in, Relative and for Points – Corner.  You can also apply Zig-Zag effect on top of roughen but in that case draw Rounded Rectangle.  Select shape with black arrow tool and go to Edit – Copy. Close Illustrator and start Photoshop. In Photoshop create new blank document. For Preset use Clipboard or any other. Then Paste clipboard content – Edit > Paste or Ctrl + V. Paste dialog will appear, choose Path and click OK.  Next step is to define new shape so You can use it at any time. Go to Edit > Define Custom Shape.. In Shape name dialog give name to the shape and click OK.  Close file without saving and open the image where You want to add torn edges effect. Convert Background layer to normal because we are about to add vector mask to that layer and Background can not contain vector mask. Then choose Custom Shape Tool from Toolbox and scroll down till You find saved shape. Double click on shape to select it and close pop-up window.  In Options Bar click on Paths icon.  If You want for example to have torn edges on left side and at bottom, click outside of image area on left side and drag to draw shape like so:  Choose black arrow tool (A), right click on image area and choose Create Vector Mask.  You can reposition vector mask at any time, click on vector mask on Layers palette to select it and with black arrow tool active click on image and drag to new position. Press Enter to confirm.  To make torn edges more realistic double click on layers thumbnail to open Layer Style dialog. Apply Drop Shadow and Stroke 1 pixel effects (try and to lower Stroke opacity to 70-85%).  Here is example if Zig-Zag is applied in Illustrator along with Roughen.

One more tip: to get rid of transparent pixels go to Image > Trim and accept default settings.  That’s it. Save the image as PNG from Save For Web & Devices and post it on Your blog or site.

#4. How to make torn edge (texture) effect in Photoshop.

• On your open layout file– create a new layer for your paper and fill with your desired colour. • Create a new layer for your torn edge. • Select a rough edged brush and draw in your torn edge.

• Apply a small inner bevel and a texture of your choice to your edge.

• Delete the unneeded portion of the paper layer and move your edge layer to below your paper layer – adjust the layers so that the torn edge peeps out from behind the paper layer.

• At this stage you may wish to apply a very tiny bevel to your paper layer and a slight texture – this is optional. • Using your eraser and a rough edged brush ( could be the same brush but smaller) with a very low opacity of around 10 – 30 % run along the edge of your paper layer to smooth the blend between the two layers.

• This may well be sufficient in which case merge your layers and apply a slight drop shadow. • Extra options you can try out are: • Applying an inner shadow to your edge layer in a darker shade of the colour of your edge.

• Adding Noise to your edge layer.

• Using your low opacity eraser along the torn edge of your edge layer.

• When you are happy with the look of your edge merge your layers and apply a tiny drop shadow in the direction of the torn edge – in other words so the shadow shows up slightly under the torn edge of your paper.

#4. How to make torn edge (texture) effect in Photoshop.

  There are numerous ways to create a ‘torn’ edge.  This is just one method to create this look at the right.

What you’ll need:

Adobe Elements 2.0

Background paper in digital format

You’ll learn how to:

Use the Lasso tool

Use Layers

Use the Move Tool

Use the Eraser Tool

Add a Drop Shadow

Open Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Open your Photo.

Choose File > Open and browse your system for photo.

Click photo of choice and then choose Open.

  Select the Lasso  Tool from the Toolbox.

  Draw a freehand shape around the area of the background paper that you want to use in your layout.

  Now, we are going to put that selection on a new Layer.   Choose Layer > New > Layer via Cut.

       The Layer Palette should look similar to this. 

The part of the paper we are going to ‘tear’ should be on its own layer.

        Now, we need to do something with the Background layer.  You can either paste in another paper, or make it a solid color, as shown here.  Here’s how:

Click on the Background Layer in the Layers Palette to make it active.

Use the Eyedropper  Tool to select a color from your image, by clicking on the image.

Choose Select > All.

Choose Edit > Fill.  Make sure Foreground Color is selected, and click OK.

       Now, to make the ‘tear’ look a little more realistic, we are going to use Layers.

  Make sure the top ‘torn’ layer is selected. 

Choose Layer > Duplicate Layer.

Now, click on the middle layer to make it active, as shown at the right.

Select the Move Tool  from the toolbox.

Use the down arrow on your keyboard to nudge the layer downward, one pixel at a time. (Try 5 or 6 pixels).

Then choose Enhance > Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation.  Increase theLightness by 50. 

(You will only see the edge of the middle layer lighten.)

  To apply some texture to the torn area,   choose Filter > Texture > Craquelure.

Experiment with the settings until you get the desired amount of texture.

Click OK.

With the middle layer still active, select the Eraser tool .

On the Options Bar, make sure you have the default options selected, as shown at the right.

With the Eraser, draw along the edge of the paper to make the ‘torn’ part more irregular.

    To combine the two torn layers together, make the top layer active.

On the Layers Palette, click on the MORE button, and choose Merge Down.

        Now, you can add a drop Shadow to your torn edge by choosing the Layer Styles Tab in the Palette Well.

  Choose Drop Shadows from the pull down menu, and select a drop shadow for your tear.  Soft Edge works nicely.

      You’re finished!

  Now be sure to save your file.

#1. How to make torn edge (texture) effect in Photoshop.

Start with a blank document and make a square selection with the Marquee tool [M] a little smaller than your document.

Create a Solid Color Adjustment Layer and fill it with whatever color you want. In this case, I used #6D665B.

Now choose the Brush tool [B]. Select the Brush menu at the top, in your Options palette, and select the Chalk 17 pixels brush. NOTE: If you are having trouble finding the brush, when your Brush palette drops down, select the small arrow in the upper right corner, then select Small List. It should make your palette look like mine.

Press [D] to set your colors back to default. Bring up your Brush Options by pressing [F5] or going [Window > Brushes].

Click on “Shape Dynamics” and change the settings similar to mine:

Size Jitter: 100% Minimum Diameter: 0% Angle Jitter: 50% Roundness Jitter: 25% Minimum Roundness: 25% Flip X Jitter: Yes Flip Y Jitter: Yes

NOTE: I use a Wacom Tablet (www.wacom.com ) so my brush tip shape preview probably looks different than yours. Mine is feathered at the edges.

Click on “Scattering” and change the settings similar to mine:

Scatter: 100% Both Axes: Yes Count: 1 Count Jitter: 0%

Next, click on “Texture”. Click on the texture preview window, and choose the second texture from the left.

Then, change the settings:

Scale: 100% Mode: Color Burn Depth: 50%

Click on “Other Dynamics” and change the settings to:

Opacity Jitter: 50% Flow Jitter: 0%

And finally, click on “Wet Edges” and make sure “Smoothing” is checked.

Now, just brush along the edges of your color square, and watch how it works.

You’ll probably want to save your brush settings. Click on your Brush Presets menu again, and choose “New Brush Preset…”. Name the brush whatever you like.

Go back to the Brush Preset menu and choose the “Spatter 24 pixels” brush.

Go back to the Brushes window and check the same settings you had earlier. When you click on each box, it should remember your settings from the previous brush. The only difference, is we’re going to set: Scattering: 1000%

Set your foreground color to a light gray, I used #B6B6B6.

Now, don’t click and drag. Just point and click once, randomly across your image. This should add a little more distress.

Now, we’re going to create another Solid Color Adjustment Layer. Make it slightly darker than the color of your first one. Then press [Ctrl + G] to create a Clipping Mask. CS2 users have to use [Ctrl + Alt + G].

Press [D] to set your colors to default. Press [Ctrl + Backspace] to fill the mask with black. With white as your foreground color, use the same brush and same technique as above.

Now, to finish it off, you can add some Noise to the top layer by going [Filter > Noise > Add Noise]. Adjust the settings to your liking and apply.

The great thing about this technique, is that you can experiment with many of the different brushes and their settings to get different effects. I’ll leave it up to you to get creative.
